Navarati is an Indian festival where we honor Goddess Durga and celebrate by doing the Garba. Garba is a form of an Indian dance which was originated in Gujarat, India.

Every year in Navarati, we Indians in Bangkok celebrate by doing the Garba. A typical Raas-Garba night here in Bangkok would have live musicians singing, a large area to dance in, and a variety of different cuisines to eat from.

Women usually wear mid-length skirts or dresses which are comfortable to dance in and men usually wear long t-shirts with pants. Raas-Garba usually starts at 7:30 pm and ends at 6:00 am in the morning.

I have been attending Raas-Garba here in Bangkok for a couple of years now and after every night of non-stop dancing I end up with sore feet, numb ears, and ugly dark circles, but with that being said I have to say that the experience at the end of it is so worth everything.

Garba has taught me a lot go things, from collaborating with everyone to dancing in synchronization, but most importantly it has taught me how to dance like no one is watching. Being there in the moment, dancing on the beat, swaying with the music, and being surrounded by all your friends is once in a lifetime experience and I am so glad to have this experience.
